🚨 UWCL: Bayern must bury their semi-final dream, Barcelona dismantle Rome

Bayern wanted to clarify the semi-finals against Arsenal tonight. Instead, the Champions League dream was over after just a few minutes.

As if the weather had been an omen this evening: the match started in the pouring rain. And at the end of the first half, Bayern left the pitch like watered poodles. Arsenal had to deal with the loss of captain Kim Little early on after she suffered an injury when Sarah Zadrazil tackled a yellow card. Jonas Eidevall’s team recovered quickly.

And how! In the 19th minute, Frida Maanum gave the Gunners the lead with a magnificent shot, just a little later Stina Blackstenius (26th) made it 2-0. Arsenal could easily have led 4-0 after 45 minutes, but Blackstenius and Co. missed a few great chances or failed to hit the crossbar. Bayern, on the other hand, did not enter their duels – the semi-finals seemed far away at that time.

That changed at the start of the second half. Bayern managed to put their opponent more in their own half and came dangerously past the Gunners’ goal on several occasions. But neither Klara Bühl nor Lina Magull could convert their good chances. Arsenal’s Caitlin Foord should have made it 3-0 in the 73rd minute. But his shot just missed the mark.

Even though the second half was more balanced, the 2-1 that saved Bayern in injury time just didn’t want to succeed anymore. And so, like last year, coach Alexander Straus’ side must bury their Champions League dreams after the quarter-finals.

In the first match of the evening, FC Barcelona beat their hosts Rome 5-1 to secure a place in the semi-finals. Fridolina Rolfö contributed to the victory with a brace, while María León, Asisat Oshoala and Patri also added to Barca’s list of top scorers. Annamaria Serturini scored the consolation goal for AS Roma.
